The episode is called “Istanbul, à la croisée des chemins”, Istanbul at the crossroads. It aired on 9 January 2016, in the tenth season of Échappées belles, the France 5 travel programme presented by Raphaël de Casabianca. It runs an hour and a half and leaves the city quickly: after Istanbul it moves through Thrace, Balıkesir, the Princes’ Islands and Dereköy.
In the credits I appear as the wine consultant: I am the one who receives the crew in Istanbul. The episode summary also names my mother, Müjgan Yurtseven. The sequences are small things that carry a lot: a simit, the Bosphorus crossing by ferry, the market and the spices, a dish cooked at home (garlic, goat cheese, tomatoes, mint, paprika) and a red wine from Lüleburgaz opened at the table.
That wine explains the rest of the trip. I took the crew up into Thrace, into the vineyards of Lüleburgaz, where winemaker Zeynep Arca Sallie tells the story of the region. In 2016 Thrace was not an obvious destination for a French television crew: someone had to open the doors.
